Description

Moe's Original Bar-B-Que is a Colorado-based chain started by out-of-state transplants, Mike Fernandez, Ben Gilbert and Jeff Kennedy, who met at the University of Alabama and opened up a carry-out barbecue joint at the base of Vail Mountain during the 2002-03 ski season. That little spot has grown into more than a dozen restaurants across the country, including three in the metro area. After the fading Sport Bowl Lanes & Billiards ran its course, Gothic Theatre owner Steve Schalk transformed the space into the Falcon, a sci-fi themed music venue/bowling alley named after the Millennium Falcon. About a year later, the Moe's BBQ guys opened up shop there and the Falcon and Moe's BBQ were one. The hot-pit meats include pulled pork, smoked chicken, smoked turkey, shrimp, catfish, chicken wings and ribs. The traditional sides (baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad) are supplemented by rotating sides-of-the-day specials. This particular Moe's includes a small bowling alley, where you can knock down pins while you scarf down 'cue, as well as to-die-for smoked tofu for the vegetarians in the crowd.

  • 2012 | Best Vegetarian BBQ

Lovers of vegetarian barbecue, prepare to meet your maker. Moe's Bar-B-Que, a homegrown chain that got its start in the Vail Valley, prepares a heavenly, melt-in-your-mouth smoked tofu. You can order it as a plate, or smothered with coleslaw and slathered in barbecue sauce as a sandwich; you can also nix the slaw for a vegan version. To balance out your meal, Moe's has mac and cheese, potato salad and fresh green salads. And if you're eating at the Englewood address, you can also bowl a... More »

  • 2008 | Best New Venue

When he bought the nearby Sport Bowl Lanes & Billiards, Gothic Theatre owner Steve Schalk wanted to turn the spot into a live music/bowling center with a sci-fi theme, and even thought about having the Millennium Falcon crashing into the front of the place. While he didn't end up going quite that far, the iconic Star Wars spacecraft became the inspiration for this spot, and space-themed murals lining one of the walls do give it the look of a spaceship. The venue itself is out of this... More »

  • 2008 | Best New Bowling Alley

Bowling is the rock and roll of sports. It's loud, unabashedly rough around the edges and involves embarrassing fashion choices. It seemed like the perfect match, then, when the fading Sport Bowl Lanes & Billiards on South Broadway was snatched up last August by Steve Schalk, owner of the nearby Gothic Theatre. Sure enough, Schalk invested the same care and creativity into his bowling joint that he did into his theater, and now the alley, rechristened the Falcon (yes, the name refers to... More »
