The first full-scale authentically Spanish tapas bar in town in a long time is brash and fairly loud but also very good; even all the wines and cheeses are imported from Spain. A couple dozen choices are offered to mix and match, but paella and a short list of dinner entrées are also offered. The menu's offerings remain in your face with many of the flavorings. Modesto offers happy-hour specials from 5 p.m.-7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Cinco de Mayo, Derby Day and First Friday are only a few of the excuses to get out and get your drink on this weekend. Besides that, rejoice over the bounty of a new farmers' market season in Tower Gr... More »

Modesto might be big enough to hold a half-dozen authentic Spanish tapas bars, but it captures the tapas spirit nonetheless. The dishes are delicious, the drinks — the sangria, especially — flow with ease and the atmosphere is exceptionally laid-back. Modesto is about having a great time with friends. It helps that chef Grace Dinsmoor turns out the best Spanish dishes in St. Louis, from simple snacks like marinated olives or anchovies to otherworldly fare like bacon-wrapped dates and albóndigas (pork and veal meatballs). Seafood fans will enjoy a rare local appearance of octopus, and those seeking a casual evening at the bar will find both the wine and cheese selections very satisfactory. The only downside? There aren't several other tapas bars in the area for an authentic tapas crawl. Oh, well. You'll just have to order another round at Modesto.

Ever since Spanish-style tapas arrived on the international culinary scene, it seems that every other European cuisine suddenly rediscovered its own version of small-plates dining. Such wee-dish incarnations may well be delicious in their own right, but the Spanish original remains the best. And Modesto's happy hour -- in force at the bar on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 5 till 7 p.m. and all evening long on Tuesday -- is the best way in town to enjoy authentic... More »

We know why you read the RFT: Because it's free, dammit! We also know that you toss it to the side as you dig through the couch cushions for change. Fear not, small spender, your secret is safe with us; and since you've been so candid, we'll share a li'l tidbit with you: Those nickels and dimes can buy you one helluva happy hour. Modesto is laying out its renowned tapas for mere pocket change. Want a hearty meatball? That'll be a quarter, señor. How about a mini omelet? Some grilled sausage? On... More »
Fitting, really, that Modesto is located on the Hill, home of so many Italian-restaurant workhorses. Those places, they try. Modesto? Modesto just does. Lets the food speak for itself, with very little gussying-up given to Spanish ingredients. Allows parties to meander their way through their meals (lubricated by a few buckets of sangria, natch). Rises above the ballyhooed tapas craze with solid, authentic, real-deal Spanish cuisine. Throws a bash every night in its warm, wood-hued space.... More »
If the winner is predictable because there are so few tapas joints in town -- what, like two-and-a-half? -- that does not diminish the excellence that is Modesto. Were there a dozen such establishments in the Lou, Modesto would likely reign supreme. Modesto serves up Spanish tapas in an atmosphere that is both celebratory and comfortable, with grand windows that overlook its neighborhood, the Hill. The menu's a bit overwhelming, but it's well worth a detailed exploration, from the coliflor... More »
Tangerine hasn't been the same since Roxanna Ratossa -- she of the sharp wit, sexy disposition and totally hot cigarette-stained voice -- left last year; a whole row of fawners were heartbroken. Some -- gasp! -- turned to drink and ended up sauced at home alone. Others followed Ratossa to Modesto (5257 Shaw Avenue, St. Louis; 314-772-8272), where she now helms the horseshoe bar and serves all sorts of fancy wickedness to drinkers and hangers-on. Ratossa doesn't pander, doesn't patronize;... More »
The popularity of tapas in St. Louis seems to ebb and flow. Seems it's on the upswing again, with several restaurants either featuring tapas as their main focus or offering Spanish-influenced tapas-like dishes. Which is fine with us; what's mystifying is why its popularity ever fades: What could be better than gathering with friends, sharing small plates of creatively rendered morsels, accompanied by free-flowing wine? It's the art of tapeo, the perfect sybaritic marriage of food, drink and... More »
