Description

The pot roast at the Modern is the stuff of legend. The fries and breakfasts are tops, too. And the fact that you can get beer and wine? That's the sprinkles on top of the cherry on top of the whipped cream on top of the sundae. Is the Modern the absolute perfect definitive postmodern diner? Heck, yes, and stay out of our booth.

  • 2007 | BEST STAR-CHEF EXPERIENCE IN A RESTAURANT

The problem with fine restaurants is that the name chef is often far from the stoves. Not so at the Modern, where chef Phillip Becht is even there for brunch. Seriously, Becht is often to be found in the kitchen spooning creamy white sausage gravy onto buttery golden biscuits and peering over plates of pancakes at the assembled hordes. Any restaurant insider will tell you that cooking brunch is considered the purview of rank novices or others with dues to pay. After all, the name chef has... More »

  • 2004 | BEST WINE LIST

What makes a great wine list Ideally, it would be one that you couldn't assemble yourself, this afternoon, at the liquor store. No. It should reflect some committed, thoughtful buying. It should have things on it that you could not get at the liquor store today, nor, possibly, ever. Because that is one thing that will draw you out of your bunker. It should be priced to allow you to sample things you wouldn't ordinarily get to try, because on the human side, that is generous and hospitable,... More »

  • 2002 | BEST RESTAURANT TREND

There was a time in this town when cheap wine meant just that: plonk. Suddenly, though, we live in a golden age of half-price wine nights. All credit goes to the Modern Cafe (337 13th Ave. NE, Minneapolis; 612.378.9882) for starting the trend, with their lovely half-price Tuesdays. But get this: At the French Meadow (2610 Lyndale Ave. S., Minneapolis; 612.870.7855) we've got half-price Saturdays; Marimar (5001 34th Ave. S., Minneapolis; 612.728.1123) hosts half-price Mondays, and at Zinc... • 2001 | BEST WINE LIST

How should one go about evaluating a wine list How about this: Its scope should match that of the restaurant's menu, and its prices should be fair. While the planet boasts plenty of eateries that fulfill that first requirement, the second count is what truly separates the ordinaire from the grand cru. The Modern Café doesn't have the Twin Cities' most expansive wine list, but that doesn't mean the roster is a thrown-together mess of mass-produced vinegar. Au contraire. Owner Jim... More »
