Description

City Pages' Description

Irish fare can be bland as the misty moorlands, but that's not the case at this jam-packed Northeast chippery. (They don't take reservations, so expect to put your name on the list and then go get a drink across the street at the Peacock Lounge.) The short, affordable menu - nothing costs more than $10 - consists of the hearty, traditional fare that two of the owners, Irish expats, grew up on, right down to the baby-food-style mushy peas. The fish and chips are crispy but mild--for more flavor go with the mashed-potato-frosted Shepherd's Pie or the fried-egg-and-ham-topped Helicopter Burger. Better yet, go on a weekend for one of Anchor's authentic Irish breakfasts: The Full Whack is piled with everything from eggs and beans to black and white pudding to bangers and rashers.

I stopped by Anchor Fish & Chips for lunch during the 2010 Art-A-While weekend. The placed was packed, but I was glad I waited for a table. I loved the quaint ambiance and the food was excellent. The bathrooms were immaculately well kept . . . which is always a good indicator of the pride the owners and staff have in their establishment.

The Shepherd’s Pie is a simple, classic, well-executed rendition of a classic pub dish, and justifies the visit by itself.

Gotta try the fish and chips!

Try the Fish & Chips, naturally. Gorgeous fish in a sweet, malty batter crisped to the heavens is not as easy as Anchor makes it look.—Mpls.St.Paul Magazine, February 2011

Get the fish and chips, duh.

Voted by City Pages in 2010 as having the Best Burger. The Helicopter Burger at Anchor is worth risking an airlift to the nearest hospital.
