Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival

Daily until April 19 @ St. Anthony Main Theater

Looking over the enormous slate of selections at the 2014 Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF), even the most devoted of film buffs can feel overwhelmed. Taking over all five screens at St. Anthony Main Theaters, the 17-day fest offers over 200 features and shorts drawn from over 60 countries, including new releases from acclaimed auteurs, indie pioneers, cult favorites, and emerging talents. Styles and subjects are equally head-spinning, encompassing virtually every genre imaginable, from scrappy documentaries to stately period dramas. Making matters more manageable, however, organizers continue to slot films into targeted programs. Looking for examples of how technology is altering society? Check out Brave New World. Have a foodie friend? Select from Culinary Cinema. Favor grindhouse chillers? Try out Late Nights. Those with a global outlook will appreciate World Cinema, while boosters of local filmmakers should seek out MN Made. Revelers should plan on securing early tickets to opening-night festivities, which includes a screening of Belle, an 18th-century historic drama from director Amma Asante, followed by an outdoor soirée in the nearby Festival Pavilion. Whether one plans ahead or chooses on a whim, every MSPIFF attendee is all but guaranteed the thrill of cinematic discovery.
