WOW...40 years ago the Orchid Society of Minnesota starting producing the Winter Carnival Orchid Shows as part of the St. Paul Winter Carnival festivities! The show was not always at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory. Looking back, how many members remember the âplankedâ Fern Room? New additions opened up to new possibilities for the show. I think the best new feature at the time was the addition of a Vendor Sales area for our members and the public. I remember having the vendors in the Bonsai Lobby area that year. It was a little small for being a sales area but that small space created a frenzy of orchid buying! The following year we saw the opening of the Porch and this became the current Vendor Area. We also saw the introduction of the Ice Castle that was used for the society displays for many years. We now have a newer version which is promising to be spectacular.
The show has given our members the ability to display and show their blooming orchids. Society members get to meet and socialize with each other and the public. The members also get to take part in the ribbon judging and can watch (quietly) the AOS judging.
Over the years, the public has been able to see orchids in a tropical setting, learn about orchid culture from our outstanding members and vendors, and have the ability to purchase quality orchids from our excellent vendors. It really is nice to see the interactions between our members and the public. Itâs also nice to see the many repeat visitors every year.
The new Bonsai Hall and Gallery will be available this year for exhibits.
We are going to have the public vote on the best Winter Carnival themed display via Facebook. Go to the Orchid Society of Minnesota's Facebook page to vote for your favorite starting January 25 at 10am until January 26 to 4pm.
Thank you to our society members, vendors and the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory staff for all you do to make the Winter Carnival Orchid Show a success.
The Winter Carnival Orchid Show has become the premier winter event for orchid lovers throughout the Midwest, attended by nearly 5,000 orchid enthusiasts. Perhaps in response to those long cold winters, Minnesotans are avid plants-men and women and welcome the chance to see and purchase something out of the ordinary.
It is the desire of the Show Committee to present orchids to the public in a way that takes full advantage of the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory setting, capturing the imagination and transporting show goers far away from frigid Minnesota--for a little while at least!
The Show Committee, Marjorie McNeely Conservatory team, and the Orchid Society of Minnesota are dedicated to producing an outstanding event this year. Orchid plants and orchid-related items will be for sale from the following vendors: Deerwood Orchids, Mans Farms, Jacque Rosenau Studio, Natt's Orchids, Orchids Garden Centre & Nursery, Parkers Prairie Floral and Greenhousel and Orchids Limited.

An enormous glass building rising out of Como Park like Atlantis re-emerging from the Mediterranean, this free-to-the-public greenhouse is just enough of a breath of the spring to come to stave away the dark thoughts of winter. An enormous glass building rising out of Como Park like Atlantis re-emerging from the Mediterranean, this free-to-the-public greenhouse is just enough of a breath of the spring to come to stave away the dark thoughts of winter. The conservatory's dome, towering at 64 feet tall, houses enormous palms, some a hundred years old; stroll through the Sunken Garden and sniff deep of the azaleas and poinsettias. For a more tropical journey, duck into the fern room, where leafy green fronds stretch in all directions. And though the conservatory is most compelling during the bleak expanse between autumn and spring, it's open year-round for your wandering pleasure.

Voted Best Place to Waste an Afternoon by City Pages in 2010. Inwinter, step into this vibrant paradise. In the summer you can also enjoy the Japanese Garden, Enchanted Garden and lovely water plants
One of my favorite places anywhere, always steamy and beautiful and peaceful. Check out the koi in the glass-paneled greenhouse.
They use beneficial insects to control their pests. Love to see that! Go Organic!
Closes at 6, not 4, in the summer.
Too bad it closes at 4:00.
