Jim Hodges: Give More Than You Take

Every Tue., Wed., Thu., Fri., Sat., Sun. until May 11 @ Walker Art Center

In 1994, artist Jim Hodges created one of his revelatory early works: an assemblage of doodles on napkins done at a coffeehouse, which he pinned to a gallery wall. Since then, Hodges and many of his sculptor-contemporaries have been revered in the art world for their works, utilizing everyday materials, that comment with restrained eloquence on life and loss. The Walker Art Center, in collaboration with the Dallas Museum of Art, has assembled the first comprehensive survey of Hodges's work. Materials used in pieces include sheet music, scarves, metal chains, mirrors, decals, and light bulbs, contextualized through such actions as sewing, folding, layering, or cutting. The show includes a variety of media, such as sculpture, photography, collage, and room-scaled installations. To kick off the exhibition, there will be a Walker After Hours preview party for $30 from 9 p.m. to midnight Friday, February 14, and an opening-day talk with Hodges and collaborative musical trio Sisyphus for $12 at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 15.
