City Pages' Description

The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome has hosted some historic sports events over its 30-plus years of existence. Most famously, of course, there were the Minnesota Twins World Series wins in 1987 and 1991, not to mention that it's the only facility to have hosted a Super Bowl, World Series, Major League All-Star Game, and the NCAA men's Final Four. In addition to those numerous sports milestones that have taken place at the Dome, the site has also hosted rock concerts by the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Paul McCartney, Black Sabbath, and U2. The outdoor parking lot even played host to some outdoor festivals over the years, including the early incarnation of Soundset. Nonetheless, the old dome is in its twilight years, and is set to be demolished in February 2014 in order to make room for the new Minnesota Vikings stadium, which will be completed in 2016. This upcoming Vikings season will be the last professional sports games played in the Metrodome before they move to the Gophers' TCF Bank Stadium for the next two years while their new facility is built.

Get used to hearing the Vikings’ “Gjallarhorn” on the P.A. system. You’ll listen to it every time the team makes a big play, gets a first down, or scores a TD.
