Description

City Pages' Description

Brothers Andrew and Adam Sieve are the third-generation of a restaurant-owning family who named their first venture after their grandmother Helen, nicknamed Hazel. They've brought neighborhood-friendly dining back to the Johnson Street space vacated by the dearly departed Pop, a contemporary take on the small-town café. Their menu of comfort foods with modern twists reflects its intergenerational patrons, a mix of old-timers and young families. They call its formula "one part grandma, one part grandson." For grandma there's a turkey commercial and a remake of Pop's beloved Swedish meatballs. For grandson, there are deep-fried, cream cheese-stuffed olives, pork loin with green apple/ginger sauce, and banana French toast smothered in caramel.

Hazel's NE is well worth the wait if you decide to go on the weekends for breakfast. The carmel rolls will melt in your mouth, the eggs benedict is hands down, the BEST I have ever tasted. The hollandaise sauce with truffle oil is delectable. You'll want to order it again and again.

Closest thing to authentic Swedish meatballs this side of the Atlantic. But the real jewel is the salmon (when they have it)!

Biscuit and gravy breakfast will make you want to go back to bed! Nom Nom Nom

  • City Pages on 12/07/12

Voted Best Neighborhood Cafe (MPLS) by City Pages in 2012! Hazel's retains the feeling of a small-town diner with enough contemporary touches to make it a perfect fit for a cozy urban neighborhood.

  • Matt on 12/18/10

Come for breakfast; try the biscuits and gravy.

Protein-up for the day with dishes like the Brisket Hash and Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs...
