City Pages's Description
The ironically named Colossal Cafe in Minneapolis is famous for its tiny space and big breakfasts. Now it has opened a St. Paul branch on Como Avenue, and while the new space is much bigger, it still has the same soul. Breakfasts and breads are its backbone. The one can't-miss menu item is the big, yeasty pancakes known as flappers. Other breakfast standouts include the roasted vegetable and feta omelet; a prosciutto, egg, and sun-dried tomato sandwich; and the cinnamon roll. The breakfast and lunch spot closes at 3, but regulars know you can pick up premade tamale pie, lasagna, or chicken potpie for dinner.
Tips from foursquare
Plan on waiting and not comfortably.
Their pancakes are yeast-raised and called "flappers," so expect tons of girls in St. Paul to start dressing up as sexy pancakes next Halloween. Then you can thank Colossal.
Voted Best Neighborhood Cafe (St. Paul) by City Pages in 2012! The vibe here is quieter, homier, & generally a bit nicer compared to the ironically named joint in mpls; A great place to stay & chat."
The bacon cream cheese omelet is to die for!
