Description

City Pages' Description

There might be a million joints that flip flapjacks in this town, but you're not truly a Minneapolitan until you've eaten the ones at Al's Breakfast in Dinkytown. Crammed into a former alleyway, the 10-foot wide, 14-stool diner has become a local institution in the past 50-plus years. Regulars know the drill: Queue up behind the seated diners as you wait for an empty stool, and be prepared to shift seats to group freed seats together for new parties. For all the hassle, diners are rewarded with cheap, tasty eats, including eggs-any-way, hash browns, and delightfully fluffy buttermilk pancakes that nearly fill the plate.

Yummy. And cheap. Try to go at a non-peak time to get seats faster. There are only 15 bar stools, so you'll probably end up waiting in line no matter when you show up. Omelets are my fave. I've also been dying to try the bacon waffles. No matter what you order, it'll be delicious!

Guy Fieri checked out this neighborhood icon serving classic eggs benedict, pancakes and French toast on an episode of Diner's, Drive-Ins and Dives.

  • Matt H. on 03/05/11

Literally the best pancakes I have ever eaten in any restaurant anywhere.

  • John H. on 03/10/09

Arrive early. Line up behind someone who's almost done. Come hungry. Enjoy the taste of those hash browns for the rest of the day!

  • City Pages on 06/10/11

Voted Best Pancakes by City Pages in 2011! This 10 ft wide Dinkytown diner, boasting only 14 seats, makes breakfast an experience, not just a meal.

  • Graham L. on 04/20/09

Be patient. Don't try to sit before your turn. If in a group come all together or don't expect to be seated together. House speialty is the Jose!
