Based in residential Ditmas Park on an unusually busy stretch of Cortelyou Road, the Middle Eastern Mimi’s Hummus is small and airily lit, with big panes of glass in the windows and geometric patterns in wood on the walls. It’s reasonably priced, too, and serves up numerous riffs on its creamy namesake hummus: meat, mushroom, fava bean. It’s easy to make a meal out of a bowl of smooth chickpeas and a pile of blistery homemade pita, but the whole menu at Mimi’s is worth exploring, from the shakshuka to the eggplant caviar, plus daily specials. Open for all three meals, plus brunch on weekends, Mimi’s also offers wine and beer, and has earned the affection of the neighborhood and the feel of a local spot. And if you want to take that feeling home, next door is Market, a high-end grocery store co-owned by one of the partners at Mimi’s, and filled with little treats. --Diana Clarke

Though Mimi's Hummus is known primarily for the magic it works on chickpeas, it also serves a kickass rendition of shakshuka, the Moroccan tomato stew with sunny-side-up eggs. At Mimi's, it's served in a scorching-hot cast-iron skillet, which makes the stew bubble and hiss mellifluously as you attempt to get it in your mouth.
