This spin-off of a Montreal-style deli in Boerum Hill expands on the sandwich promise of the original. Yes, you can still get a sterling house-cured smoked meat sandwich (the Canadian equivalent of pastrami), and oddities like the mish-mash, Ruth Wilensky, and eggs on a Montreal bagel are still in evidence, but these standards are nearly eclipsed by several enthralling newcomers. Beef on weck reproduces a Buffalo specialty of warm roast beef on a German roll something like a pretzel; while pickled veal tongue consists of glottal organ sliced thin and smeared with onion marmalade on the darkest pumpernickel you’ve ever seen. There’s a chopped liver sandwich, too, and you can side your purchase (eaten standing up at counters) with Brooklyn-style pickled veggies instead of fries.

We've spilled a lot of ink (and expended lots of electrons on the blog) promoting the virtues of Mile End Sandwich, a relative newcomer to the frontier shared by the East Village and Greenwich Village, an area that exploded with restaurants this year. Partly overlapping with the menu of its sire in Boerum Hill, this stand-up-only shop slings smoked-meat sandwiches, breakfast burgers featuring a veal sausage patty, a Montreal-style flatbread wonder called the Ruth Wilensky, Montreal-style...
