This micro eatery in Boerum Hill specializes in one thing: the smoked meat of Montreal"s Jewish community, which is a close cousin of New York pastrami. The extensively cooked brisket has been evolving since the place opened, and now it"s nearly perfect when deposited on rye bread with an assertive mustard. There are a couple of other sandwiches, too, including the Ruth Wilensky--a sort of hot-pressed Canadian panino featuring salami, named after a beloved deli in Montreal"s Mile End district, the historic Jewish neighborhood, which lies north of the Plateau. A more ambitious dinner menu has been installed in the evening, but we like the place"s identity as a sandwich shop just fine.

We've had a flood of restaurants from Montreal during the past two years, and it's a toss-up which to choose for this category because all have their individual charms and their own bailiwicks. Since M. Wells has closed pending relocation, let's say Mile End, a Brooklyn deli that has done a magnificent job of cloning the smoked meat of Jewish Montreal plus a handful of other Quebecois specialties like seed-sprinkled bagels and a sandwich called the Ruth Lewinsky. A more ambitious menu has... More »

This doesn't mean I'm forsaking my first love, Katz's pastrami, but the smoked-meat sandwich at Mile End is denser, redder, and offered in a sandwich that's just the right size for one person to eat, which means I don't have to go around looking for someone to share it with me. Spread mustard on it and add a sour pickle, and I'm in culinary nirvana. The cute and cozy premises of this Boerum Hill newcomer is another plus. More »
