When Len & Bill's went dark after fifty years in March 2010, Denver lost one of its great dives, in addition to being one of the dingiest joints in town. But after new owner Mike Keeney took over the space, he did a major overhaul on the small space, added a patio in back and added some of his own personality to the place. After opening it as Mike's Tavern in July, 2011, the bar still attracts a fair amount of Len & Bill's regulars as well a new set of neighborhood folks who might have been scared to go in the dimly-lit dive in the past.
Something is going on here after hours. It may be as simple as they are illegally serving their regulars after 2 am or that they are doing something more.
I went there and they, staff and regulars, became increasingly rude as closing time approached. My friend and I were sitting in a corner enjoying our drink talking quietly. After last call they all but threw us out while their regulars sat around watching. A couple other people in the neighborhood have reported similar experiences.
The bartender poured a drink I paid for on me for not drinking it fast enough. Nobody should go here for any reason.
