Michael's Outpost on lower Richmond is a neighborhood gay bar by day and piano bar by night. It's on the small side, but the clientele and staff are friendly to those who don't run afoul of the bar's zero-tolerance policy for nonsense. The drinks are affordable too, with $2.75 wells and domestic longnecks until 8 p.m. every day. Dartboards, two pool tables and a jukebox are available, and card games are popular at the large round tables in the back. Those in search of mere conversation will find bartenders and regulars more than happy to talk about anything and everything.
Event Review: Eye Cons, a La Cage-style Revue
Their plumage is dazzling, their wigs are precise, and they don’t need bustiers to show off their ample cleavage. The ladies of Eye Cons, a La Cage style revue, have never looked more appealing than they do in the warm, winning production now appearing at Michael’s Outpost every Saturday night at 7:30 p.m, “We are what we are, and what we are is an illusion,” sing the Eye Cons in their closing number. And the illusions they create are jaw dropping unbelievable transformations into well known celebrities. Eye Cons, featuring a mix of veteran and newer female impersonators, is a raucous music and comedy cabaret show. Personalities include Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, Bette Midler, Liza Minnelli, Celine Dion, Reba, Tina Turner, and Faith Hill. The theater is small enough so that every seat is a great one. Kourtney Page Van Wales, who has portrayed female characters since the 1980's introduces the acts and has a great comedic rapport with the audience. Other performers, all excellent in their various incarnations, include Jame’ Roberts, DeyJzah Mirage, and Lana Blake. There is no cover charge and the bar drinks, with clever names such as Chocolate Tini Turner and Reba Red Royal are remarkably inexpensive. And speaking of transformations whoever has re-imagined Michael’s Outpost has done a fabulous job. Michael’s Outpost, one of Houston’s venerable gay bars, has the look and feel of a Parisian 19th century cabaret. It is one of the best gathering places in the Houston area and a jewel in the crown of the Montrose scene. Houston is growing up.
