A top-flight club on a dark city sidestreet, Mezzanine has elements of both red-velvet slickness and brick-wall industrial chic, although the dance floor's loud enough and packed enough that you may not notice. Every week brings a fresh new music lineup, with talent ranging from electro hipsters and European house DJs to hip-hop MCs and indie rock bands, all playing through a sound system loud enough to shake the floor. If dancing isn't your thing, you can always go upstairs to the more chilled-out lounge or head out back for a cig break in the fenced-in smoking section.
Lights Down Low has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the closet-sized basement of 222 Hyde. Now one of the most respected party crews...
Pusha T, half of the Virginia coke-rap duo Clipse and the last big-deal signee to Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music label, works in mysterious ways. This helps explain how he came by his prodigious messiah complex (his first solo full-length, slated... More »
For dedicated fans of '70s funk and R&B, Shuggie Otis is almost a mythical figure: An artist who arrived out of the box with jaw-dropping guitar and vocal talent, released a trio of largely beloved, offbeat funk/soul albums, and then more or less... More »
With the launch of TNGHT, young beatsmiths Hudson Mohawke and Lunice forged the Glasgow-Montreal connection you've always longed for. The rising electronic musicians first became acquainted through MySpace circa 2008, but it wasn't until around... More »
Career-wise, Dillon Francis is in an enviable spot. The 25-year-old Los Angeles resident has only been in the producing game since 2009 (tireless tastemaker Diplo gave him his break), and he's both one of the rising names in dubstep and a leader... More »
Fresh off the success off his 2012 full-length debut album By Your Side, French producer/DJ Thibaut Berland, aka Breakbot, has mastered the art of giving a modern twist to '70s disco and funk. Citing... More »
Many of San Francisco's nightclubs have a gimmick; something that a venue is known for. That can be a good thing, but all too often it makes a place predictable. Mezzanine is a spot that is thankfully hard to pigeonhole, and the crowd varies widely depending on the night, giving it a chameleonic quality. To hip-hop fans, it's often a packed-to-the-gills sweatbox that's the only place to see national artists who might not have otherwise stopped here. To electronic music fetishists, it can take on a gallerylike atmosphere (if the music is more on the experimental side), or resemble a world-class hedonistic danceteria of rhythm revelers. Indie rockers love it, too. Best of all, the sound won't cause ear bleeding.
I love this space to see a show or go to a club or party. There are plenty of bars, and different seating areas, and they have an outdoor area to get some air or for the smokers to get their fix in back.
You wanna dance? Go!

Last year was a great one for local alternative music. Bands like Scissors for Lefty, the Cuts, and the Ex-Boyfriends (to name just a few) earned national attention for their varying takes on the '80s-fueled alt-rock sound that's swept the country. Before these acts played Conan, however, they played here. Having just celebrated its first anniversary, the "California Homegrown Music Series" is the place to catch Bay Area bands on their way up, and it has found a great home in Mezzanine,... More »
The years when rock clubs and discothèques were mutually exclusive are behind us. Electronic music is no longer the sole province of the DJ; rock is no longer just for guys with guitars. Funk-punk, electroclash, glitch-hop, broken beat -- these days, virtually every subgenre you can name is a schizophrenic mix of sounds. Nightclubs need to be able to handle them all, and Mezzanine does it as good as or better than any. Swanker than the hippest house clubs, yet with a ravelike ambience... More »
