P.D. Eastman's beloved tail (see what we did there?) of dogs coming and going while dissing a lady dog's hat is a quick read. Adapting it for the stage requires a much longer run time than a young audience might be able to tolerate. Hence the ten-minute break in the middle, during which the dogs hurled progressively larger beach balls into the crowd while accordionist Rob Witmer cranked out the jams. It was silly and sweet, a perfect complement to the bright and funny show that also featured a super-slow-motion lunch break, a miniature amusement park with a working roller coaster and a giant cardboard house that transformed into both a multi-dog bed and a party-hosting tree. Metro Theater Company demonstrated once again that theater doesn't need to play down to young audiences — it just needs to play with them.

And it's coming back to the Missouri History Museum this season. There's children's theater where the toddlers are up onstage -- which can be painful to watch unless you're blood kin. There's children's theater that casts adults in shows geared to kids... More »
