Metal Meets Wood 

Motor-blackened oil pools with whiskey, blood, and mayhem as 100 engines roar with a hellish sonic force. Tattooed highway gangsters with long beards and wrenches swig moonshine by dumpster fires, assail virgins, and crush bones into gravel beneath their boots. These are outlaw bikers, but you won’t find them at Metal305’s vintage-motorcycle night, Metal Meets Wood, in Wynwood. Cofounder Matthew Atkatz says, “It’s a really mixed crowd of vintage-motorcycle enthusiasts, which is pretty amazing.” The scene coalesces every Thursday around 8 p.m. at Wood Tavern (2531 NW Second Ave., Miami), where lovers of Moto Guzzis, Triumphs, Hondas, and Ducattis from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s meet on the street to hang out, talk shop, and show off their wheels. Lately, more and different crews of riders have been showing up, Atkatz says. “We’ve got Harleys and crotch rockets coming now, and it’s been all positive.” It’s all part of a vintage-motorcycle scene that’s cropping up in South Florida. “We’re seeing small shops dedicated to it. Some people want to preserve exact assembly line models, like factory fuckin’ perfect; others like totally custom hot-rod bikes. Some nights we wrap all four corners of the street in motorcycles. It’s a great place for people who like vintage bikes to meet up every week. And it’s free.” — By Jacob Katel
