This old-school establishment serves diner food at its best. The traditional menu at Mel’s Diner has everything from biscuits and gravy for breakfast to hot sandwiches for lunch – and has hearty meat n’ veggies skillets and omelets for brunch in between. For a heftier meal, Mel’s serves pork chops, steak with brown gravy, jumbo shrimp, meatloaf sandwiches, grilled cheese with bacon, and liver and onions during lunch and dinner. Along with the classic menu and throwback-to-the-‘50s feel, Mel’s Diner has an air of nostalgia to boot. The diner served as the location for the opening credits and some inside scenes of Alice, the successful sitcom about a waitress in a roadside diner that ran from 1976 to 1985. Into the new millennium, the spot has retained the same no-nonsense, small-town American charm – except these days its location on busy Grand Ave. puts it smack dab in the middle of modern-day Phoenix.
