Description

The MCA Cafe, the restaurant at the Museum of Contemporary Art, is one of the coolest nosh joints around, thanks to a great selection of coffee and booze, surprisingly good food and killer views from the rooftop location. The rub? You have to cough up the museum's $10 admission charge to get in. A better option? The MCA's $45 individual annual membership. Not only do you receive all those VIP perks, but you and a guest get unlimited access to the restaurant, which feels like a cafe turned private clubhouse. You often have the place to yourself when it opens at 11 a.m. every day, and if you can hang on for nine hours, you'll watch it transform into a swanky members-only bar before it closes at 10 p.m. on Friday night.

  • 2012 | Best Museum Exhibit

In the spring of 2011, Jill Desmond, then a young curatorial assistant at the Denver Art Museum, looked at the contents of the permanent collection in the Modern and Contemporary department and realized there were a lot of high-tech pieces. Enough, it turns out, to pull off the blockbuster Blink! Light, Sound and the Moving Image, a show that rambled over two levels of the Hamilton Building. Desmond included works by the greats who started it all, including Nam June Paik and Dan Flavin, as... More »

  • 2011 | Best Museum Exhibit

Christo and his late wife, Jeanne-Claude, first achieved worldwide fame with "Valley Curtain," a project they carried out in Colorado in the 1970s. For that massive work, the pair suspended an enormous drapery across Rifle Gap in the western portion of the state. Thirty years later, they again looked to Colorado for what will surely be one of their last pieces, "Over the River." To explicate and promote this proposal, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver presented a spectacular show of... More »

  • 2008 | Best Romper Room

When the Museum of Contemporary Art/Denver opened this past fall, it was immediately celebrated far and wide for its plucky backstory, sleek design and striking exhibits. But few people mentioned the superb room on the top floor filled with little else but massive beanbag chairs. We're not sure what, exactly, this space has to do with contemporary art, but it sure is awesome. It's the perfect spot for a relaxing time-out with the kids after they've had more than their fair share of the... More »

  • 2008 | Best New Building

When Cydney Payton became director of the Museum of Contemporary Art/Denver, it was located in a former fish market. She immediately started pushing for a permanent home for the institution, and less than eight years later, through the sheer force of her will -- and a lot of donations -- the MCA is now in its own building. And what a building it is: Designed by an international up-and-comer David Adjaye, a London-based architect who won a competition for the job, it's a... More »
