Description

Tequila and its close cousin mezcal are the focus of this cozy East Village cocktail den. The drinks were concocted by Death & Co. bartender Phillip Ward, so you know they're taken seriously. These aren't your standard margaritas; drinks like the Cinnsation (mezcal, mulled apple cider, cinnamon bark and Peychaud's Bitters) and the Cantinflas (mole bitters, tequila, mezcal, sherry and Grand Marnier) utilize fresh, homemade ingredients as well as top shelf liquor. If you want to get schooled in the ways of quality tequila and mezcal (which is made from the same agave plant as tequila), you can always order them in flights of three, which come with a complimentary sangrita. Soak up all that booze with small plates such as chorizo-stuffed shrimp and scallops or full plates like lobster ceviche and tamales filled with mole-braised chicken. The hacienda speakeasy vibe comes from the colorful Mexican tile, smiling Dia de los Muertos figurines and hidden-away stalls.— Keith Wagstaff

Decorated in Spanish tile and votive candles, this East Village hideaway specializes in drinks from south of the border, including tequila and mezcal. You can ring up quite the tab for those delicate... More »

  • 2009 | Best Niche Bar

The website of Mayahuel takes great pains to acknowledge the stigma of a certain amber nectar: "Perhaps your experience with tequila was decidedly collegiate," thunders the gray script. "Perhaps it involved praying to a certain ironic goddess. Perhaps, consequently, you have since maintained that you don't do tequila." Who has been reading our diaries? But it's hard to feel like a drunk freshman at a kegger inside these tastefully draped confines; the split-level bar is darkly romantic,... More »
