This family-owned restaurant, the progeny of the venerable Matt's Famous El Rancho in Austin, is a vast indoor and outdoor space. The giant two-level dining room (private room adjacent) has a bar in the back and a giant mural of Texas all-stars is joined by a rocking patio. The neighborhood joint is most lauded for its chile relleno and chicken-fried steak platters. It's also got a bit of myth attached to it in the popular Bob Armstrong Dip, layers of taco meat, guacamole, sour cream and queso in a bowl named after a former Texas Land Commissioner. After dinner and a couple potent margaritas, scoot on over to the to historic Lakewood Theater next door for its monthly burlesque revue.
Had the WORST experience in the Bar! The restaurant and bar were nearly empty and now I know why. Only one other couple were in the bar and my friend and I were talking "Mom talk" you know kids, school so on and the older couple at the table near us got their BIG meal then decided that we were were talking too loud and moved to the table on the other side of us. As they moved they LOUDLY almost a shout said it was because we were too loud and then they told us to SHUT UP as they walked by and then called my friend a BAD B name---LOUDLY. We requested that the manager do something because the couple kept on but she did NOTHING. SO Don't go to here thinking you can sit in the bar and have a drink and talk because you can't. The Manager did not do anything to make the situation better so we had one drink and left. In fact they brought us a bill after one drink, I guess to encourage us to leave. Don't go to Matt's go someplace where they alllow you to talk in the bar and don't let other people be verbally abusive. Matt's does not want bar patrons they want people to be in the bar eating dinner silently.
Great for dinner!
Matt's has fantastic Mexican food. Great patio to hang out on, lots of space inside plus the upstairs. Good place for large parties. Margaritas are great too.
September was another churning month for the Dallas restaurant community. Sisu opened in Uptown, Ser took over the 27th floor of the Hilton Anatole and Campo said goodbye. Read on for the full list ... More »
While barbecue is certainly important foodstuff in the Lone Star State, it has roots in many other areas of the country and world. But Tex-Mex has been jacking up G.I. Tracts here for 100 years -- lon... More »

For several years, I have engaged in a one-way, anonymous (he knows my words, I know his food) correspondence with eccentric Dallas restaurateur Gene Street. That is, Gene, like my mother, mails me stuff he thinks I should read. For instance, a... More »
If you've ever spent time in Austin then you know it as well as we do--Dallas just can't do queso right. Sure, our fair city is full of decent Mexican food joints, maybe even a couple of great ones. But let's face it--even El Ranchito, Mia's and La Calle Doce serve up a substandard bowl of the yellow goodness compared with our Central Texas neighbors. Thank God for Matt's Rancho Martinez then, an East Dallas institution sprung fully formed from the nurturing bosom of an Austin... More »
A friend once said, "Well, you know it's a good patio if my mother will sit there." She went on to discuss the cool temperatures, ease of seating and the lively but not too intrusive atmosphere required to appease her high-maintenance madre. We had one in mind, but she had already begun to confirm, "She'll really only sit on the patio at Matt's." Matt's Rancho Martinez has been a long-time provider of mouth-watering Tex-Mex to the residents of Lakewood and beyond, but over the years, the... More »
As legend would have it, the Bob Armstrong Dip at Matt's was christened after the former Texas land commissioner of the same name because he came up with the recipe for the specialty item during his frequent visits to the original Matt's in Austin. Also known to insiders as Bob Dip, it is a tasty appetizer chock-full of hot melted cheese, guacamole, sour cream, and taco meat. Choose only the strongest of chips, because the thickness of this queso can weigh them down. Of course, it can do the... More »
