Description

This small, crowded breakfast nook has a big, hungry following. Owner Matt Pool's usually there, slinging a pitcher of orange juice and greeting people who come through the door. The day's specials are scribbled on a chalkboard behind the counter, where people sit down to a good cup of coffee, fluffy pancakes made from scratch, and heaping plates of eggs scrambled with salami. The busy clatter of silverware punctuates the buzz of conversation coming from a tiny side room, and at tables alongside the restaurant's large picture windows, guests are in full view of whoever's waiting outside for a table. Even in the summertime, that could mean a couple dozen people, but quality ingredients and friendly service make it worthwhile.

  • 2011 | Best Cobb Salad

Okay, you're right: Guy Fieri did not go to Matt's Big Breakfast for a salad. But, hey, we know way more about this town than that bleached-blond douchebag, and we're here to tell you that the thing to get at Matt's (particularly if you're not a fan of breakfast-for-lunch or your doctor's cut you off from burgers cooked in butter) is the Cobb. This is the best Cobb salad we've ever had: Fresh romaine is tossed in a giant white bowl, then drowned in hunks of tomato, blue cheese, chicken,... More »

  • 2011 | Best Hangover Breakfast

The morning after can be rough, and the last thing you want to do is stand outside in the scorching heat waiting for grub. Luckily, with a raging hangover you won't even roll out of bed until noon, and by then the line at Matt's Big Breakfast is nearly nonexistent -- let the early birds stand in line pecking for space. So roll in wearing a pair of giant sunglasses, pound three glasses of water, and demolish a pile of carbs. We recommend the hog and chick (with delicious fresh jam and... More »

  • 2010 | Best Breakfast, Central Phoenix

The name only becomes more ironic as time goes by -- Matt's Big Breakfast feels smaller with every new customer who discovers the place (often courtesy of The Food Network) and makes the wait here that much longer. But what's impressive is how the quality has stayed so consistent in spite of Matt's popularity. The from-scratch pancakes are still fluffy and perfect, the egg dishes are just as mouthwatering, and they still use quality local ingredients, from the citrus juice in your glass... More »

  • 2009 | Best Breakfast

Why is there a crowd of a few dozen people milling around on the corner of First Street and McKinley on a 100-degree day Are they crazy Well, yes -- crazy for really delicious, all-American breakfast food, perhaps. These days, the mob outside Matt's Big Breakfast is a mix of downtown locals and longtime fans, as well as curious first-timers who've inevitably seen Matt's on the Food Network or read about it in Bon Appetit. And, yeah, we know we're perpetuating the hype by giving them... More »

  • 2008 | Best Local Eatery We Wish Were a Chain

Matt and Erenia Pool, we love you guys. And, boy, we'd love to clone you -- or at least your fantastic little, er, big breakfast joint. The buzz on Matt's Big Breakfast has been strong ever since it opened a few years ago, and indeed, there's always been a bit of a wait for a table. The growing popularity of the downtown farmers market, just a block away, has given more exposure to Matt's homey dishes, from perfect, fluffy pancakes to fresh-squeezed local orange juice to savory egg... • 2008 | Best Perfect Phoenix Sunday in Foul Weather

The weather outside is frightful. The thought of leaving your hermetically sealed cocoon Not the least bit delightful. So don't. Play indoors at these two oh-so-PHX landmarks. Some self-proclaimed geniuses will tell you to lay off the heavy stuff -- the dairy, the coffee -- when it's hot, but those eggheads are full of bunk. When facing the prospect of the 21st consecutive day of temps above 110 -- and it's still only July -- we Phoenicians want some damn comfort food,... More »

  • 2007 | BEST DOWNTOWN BREAKFAST

Truth be told, we don't always take the time for the most important meal of the day. But when we need to gear up for a busy day at work, fortify ourselves for a road trip, or just cheer ourselves up with a sweet stack of griddlecakes, we head straight to Matt's Big Breakfast. This tiny, sunny diner's a downtown icon, and not just because of its orange counters or sassy retro décor. Here, the coffee's always strong, the juice is straight-outta-the-orange, and the thick bacon strips... More »

  • 2005 | BEST DOWNTOWN BREAKFAST

Matt's Big Breakfast serves a big-tasting breakfast in a sweet, sunny little diner, and if you don't time it right, you'll have to wait for a table. But it's worth it for the thick (yet still crispy) bacon alone; you might also want to sample the fresh orange juice, omelets and whole-wheat toast while you're there. The coffee's strong, and so is the chance you'll run into someone you know -- this has become downtown Phoenix's hipster hangout for the morning meal. If you can't stand that,... More »

Best breakfast in town, for those of us that enjoy breakfast all day long. Order just the way you like, or choose from their wonderful omelets selection, either way, you will be satisfied.
