You'll feel like you're in a Swiss Alpine chalet in this cozy place paneled in pale wood. A variety of Swiss dishes are available, but almost everybody comes here for one of the cheese fondues (at least nine are on offer) or the Fondue Bourguignonne, for which you skewer chunks of beef and cook them in a pot of boiling oil at your table. Other cook-at-the-table options feature vegetable or red wine broth, with thin slices of beef. Desserts include chocolate fondue, of course, served with fruit and cake. Matterhorn isn't just for a novelty meal: The ingredients and service are top-notch.

For a while, I thought Clement was the best restaurant street in San Francisco, but now I'm pretty sure it's either Mission (it would take months to eat your way from Boulevard to Daly City) or Geary (which isn't so impressive downtown but acquire... More >
