Mateo’s regulars include men in suits and women in sparkling tops twisting stemware between manicured fingers, transplants from the coasts who have a good appreciation for the Colorado lifestyle. This restaurant right on the bustling Pearl Street Mall in Boulder serves French bar fare that includes decadently creamy Brussels sprouts gratin, a croque-monsieur or bistro burger, and a monstrous plateau provençal of cured meats, cheeses, olives and nuts. But while the accent may be French, the emphasis here is definitely on local – local produce as well as local diners who use Mateo as a neighborhood hangout. During the summer, the secluded patio is a perfect place to share snacks and sparkling wine; in the winter, post up at the marble bar inside for big bowls of mussels.

Great outdoor patio and cozy, romantic dining inside
So many restaurants have stopped taking reservations, it's becoming commonplace for would-be diners to stand awkwardly in a foyer the size of a broom closet or resort to paying extra in order to drink overpriced liquor at an overcrowded bar until a table comes open. But Mateo, a charmingly hip Provençal spot in Boulder, makes the wait a worthwhile part of the whole dining experience. You get to pass the time in a plush, velvety alcove next to the front window, settled against soft... More »
