At Masterpiece, you order at the counter, pay your green, wait for someone to shout your name over the din and then pick up some of the best contemporary deli fare you may ever eat. It even won our 2010 Best of Denver award for Best Sandwiches! Partners Justin Brunson and Steve Allee and their crew make their own shrimp-and-tofu miso soup and cure their own gravlax. If you're going to haul out the ego and deem your restaurant -- or, in this case, deli -- a "masterpiece," you'd better live up to the superlative. Masterpiece does.

    I could go on and on about every wonderful thing on the menu but the truth is you could throw a dart at the menu and hit the perfect sandwich.

    At Masterpiece Delicatessen, partners Justin Brunson and Steve Allee do some pretty amazing things with a little bread, a little meat, a little this-and-that. Their simplest creations — egg sandwiches, grilled cheese, turkey with pears and cranberry honey — show their command of the artistry of restraint (just enough, never too much), while their more complicated plates demonstrate a high-end, Super Frog cookery gone feral in the service of a soup-and-sandwich board. Their kung fu is strong, no doubt. And here in Denver, we're lucky to have them.
