Marquee Bar & Grill in the AMC Mainstreet Theatre, 1400 Main St., 816-474-4545. When the glamorous Mainstreet Theater opened as a vaudeville house in 1921, this block of downtown Kansas City was loaded with places to dine before or after the show. There may be fewer restaurants now, but in the stylishly renovated AMC Mainstreet Theatre, patrons can eat and dine at the same time. For a ticket upcharge, friends can watch a film and enjoy cocktails and full meals in one of the VIP suites or dine in the Marquee Bar & Grill, created in the soaring space that was the original theater lobby. The design of the room is now minimalist chic, but the menu of comfort fare evokes a time when dinner was never minimal, in fact, no one gave a damn about diets. Chef Richard O'Brien's menu boasts burgers, curly-Q fries, meatloaf, macaroni-and-cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches on 9-grain bread and big desserts. On Friday and Saturday nights, the Marquee serves a "late nite" menu - predominantly breakfast dishes - until 5 a.m.
