Cozy little spot with a full bar and all of the seafood specialties associated with a 16th Street mariscos joint: tostados topped with fresh octopus, schooners filled with shrimp cocktail, whole fried or grilled mojarra, and shrimp in tomatillo sauce (camarones culichi), with the most expensive plate being about $14. Run by the Maldonado family, Mariscos Playa Hermosa is doing its part to bring the sea to the desert. So get on over there, SpongeBob, and eat some crustaceans.
Hey, readers, get ready. We're putting new meaning into the term "street food." For Chow Bella's latest mission -- "Eating 16th Street" -- we've employed a young woman who's literally eaten her way a... More »
Those who may have heard (and believed) people who say, "You can't get decent seafood in the Valley 'cause we live in a desert," might also want to keep an eye out for while-you-were-sleeping organ ha... More »
Hungry for some good Mexican food? Me, too. I have favorite destinations all over the city, but living and working close to downtown, I'm spoiled to have Phoenix's Mexican Restaurant Row nearby. Stretching from roughly Washington Street to... More »
Mariscos Playa Hermosa Phoenix's sister city in Mexico is Hermosillo, in the Sonoran region that's home to a variety of distinctive caldos (soups), carne de marinada (marinated meats), zesty chiles and, most of all, fresh seafood. Hermosillo,... More »
Seafood in Arizona generally is the butt of a joke rather than the makings of a tasty night on the town. Mariscos Playa Hermosa is here to assuage our landlocked fears of consuming seafood in desert environs. The mariscos at Playa Hermosa are fresh and briny (in a good way). Take your pick of scallops, calamari, octopus, shrimp, mussels, and just about any other sweet seafood gem. We recommend the Caldo de 7 Mares (7 Seas Soup), a mariscos smorgasbord of seven different ocean critters. And... More »
Anyone who complains about the lack of good seafood spots in the middle of the desert has obviously never frequented our city's many fine mariscos joints, where a bite of cool ceviche can transport you straight to the ocean. Mariscos Playa Hermosa feels beachy even in its colorful décor, and the way folks here know how to keep the cold Corona flowing. Seven seas soup (brimming with clams, mussels, shrimp, fish, crab, and octopus), refreshing, cilantro-tinged seafood cocktails, grilled... More »
Yeah, yeah, we know we're giving away one of central Phoenix's best-kept secrets here, but more people need to know about this splendid little nook. Who knows how many people drive right by Mariscos Playa Hermosa's humble storefront without knowing how charming it is inside -- friendly service, a full bar, and colorful, tropical décor? Even more appealing is the presentation of the seafood dishes here. Everything's lavishly served with limes and avocado slices and fresh... More »
Maybe it's because we live deep in the middle of Cactus Country that we Phoenicians always seem to be craving seafood. Seems to explain the abundance of mariscos joints here in Sand Land, eh? Still, not all Mexican seafood establishments are created equal. So the one we always make a beeline for when that seafood craving overtakes us is Mariscos Playa Hermosa on 16th Street at Garfield. Here, the pulpo tostadas taste as fresh and the ceviches seem as zesty-lemony-limey as they should. And... More »
We never know when the fever will hit us (someone cue Peggy Lee) -- the fever for Mariscos Playa Hermosa's camarónes culichi, or shrimp in green tomatillo sauce. And once we've got the fever, nothing will do but to make a beeline to this humble little place and snarf up a serving of that tangy ambrosia, which includes melted jack cheese and fat, fresh shrimp, with a side of rice and tortillas. Tomatillos may be our favorite member of the nightshade family. When you buy them fresh,... More »
Went there with my friends after work and it was tons of fun! great food and the decor fun. The Shrimp mojo de ajo! Shrimp in garlic sauce finger licking good! A must repeat! The waiters were so friendly with family friendly smiles.
Really good fish ceviche. They have all the authentic Mexican seafood dishes along with the decor.
