This Harlem diner offers everything you'd expect from a diner, and while the pancakes and eggs are very good, they're not the reason to come here. Neither is a quick bite. Margie's Red Rose Diner specializes in soul food and a familial atmosphere. The wait might be long, and the service a bit haphazard, but it's all very good natured and the food is better. From soul food staples like cheese grits, fried or smothered pork chops, and fried chicken to sides of cornbread, collards, baked macaroni, and candied yams to more unusual offerings like salmon cakes and lemonade pie, the food is hearty and fresh--and cheap. Run by husband-and-wife team Mike and Koko, the narrow dining room has fewer than ten tables draped in red cloth, and low lighting. It's a place to sit, talk, eat, get cozy, and then lean back and digest. --Diana Clarke
