The most hotly sought-after restaurant seats between Minneapolis and Texas have got to be the seats at Mandarin Kitchen's riotously popular weekend dim-sum brunch. Folks have been known to wait for an hour in the blowing snow for a chance to sup on the most delicate dumplings in the state. At dinnertime, Mandarin Kitchen serves fish fresh from its many live tanks, leading many to conclude it's the best Chinese restaurant in the state. Is it? Perhaps. But those who say hunger is the best seasoning have never experienced the great seasoning imparted when you've got yours, and others must stand in a Bloomington parking lot and watch.
Mandarin Kitchen Restaurant in Bloomington Minnesota- A Popular Restaurant that cheats customers!
Mandarin Kitchen restaurant has been a very popular place for a long time for their Roast Duck, Barbecue Pork and Roast Pork. I think they are have grown "bigger heads" since they think everyone loves to eat their dim sum and roast meats. However, if you order large portions, be aware that they can easily cheat you in many ways. One way I found this out was when I asked them to separate my large order into several small containers so they can't cut back on the portions without me knowing. Needless to say, my suspicion of them being unfair was validated when I double checked my order and costs. I ordered 9 pounds total. I went home and weighted it on a digital and reliable scale. It turned out it only weighed 6.5 pounds. They charged me for 9 pounds! I was very angry, because they cheated me out of a few pounds.
On top of that the Roast Duck, Barbecue Pork and Roast Pork meats they cut for me tasted terrible. Only about a pound of the roast pork was actual meat. The rest went straight into my garbage because it was all FAT! I specifically told them to not cut the fattest parts for me, but they still did. Since they are not reliable and dishonest you need to be very careful if you choose to eat or order from there. You wouldn’t know it if they added a few extra dollars to your bill, because most of the time it's very difficult to calculate many small orders (dim sum) or one big order. I will never order anything from there or recommend to anyone else. I hope this time I've taken to post this message saves you the trouble that I had to deal with Mandarin Kitchen restaurant in Bloomington Minnesota.
Go on the weekend for dimsum (10am-2pm). I wouldn't recommend eating there any other time. The dimsum is freshest when they are really busy, which is something that I try to keep in mind while waiting to be seated.
The parking lot tells the story at Mandarin Kitchen. On one recent Sunday morning, the asphalt surrounding this hidden Bloomington strip-mall gem was so stuffed with minivans that, much to the dismay of Buck's Unpainted Furniture, the cars spilled like burst pot-sticker innards into the spaces reserved for surrounding businesses. But Buck's pain is your gain, because this is how you spot good dim sum in this town. Southern China's beloved brunch tradition, dim sum is a family affair, and to... More »
There are many ways to judge the excellence of a dim sum palace, but for us, the decisive factor has always been dumplings. Mandarin Kitchen has the most: chive flower dumplings, with their dark greens peeking through the translucent wrappers; cilantro dumplings, fragrant with herbs; pork dumplings that are fat and wide as grins; pork dumplings with quail eggs; pork dumplings with cheerful squares of carrot; dumplings topped with quivering sea scallops; soup dumplings, bursting with broth;... What is the secret to ordering at the jam-packed, crazy-busy, carnival-meets-the-Food-Network-meets-a-Tokyo-subway-car-in-morning-rush-hour that is Mandarin Kitchen's weekend dim sum extravaganza? It is simply this: Once you score your hard-won table, no matter how your stomach howls, no matter how your sweetheart yelps, do not, do not! succumb to the charms of the first cart that comes your way. Yes, it may have lovely crayon-red squids in chili oil. Yes, it might have silky crosshatched... More »
