Mancini's Modern Italian is Fort Lauderdale restaurateur Jack Mancini's third eatery on Las Olas Boulevard; he previously owned Mancini's and M Bar on the eastern, more touristy end of the street. In 2013, he moved to the western, more businesslike, end of the downtown corridor, banking on the many floors of office buildings above him for his clientele. Though he has hired chefs who've trained under the country's top toques, Mancini says he designed the menu himself. In the slick black, beige, and white space, Mancini has built a wood-burning oven and attempts to bring together some of the flavors he found while exploring dining hot spots like San Francisco and New York. “I like the new modern way of approaching Italian cuisine,” he said, “with more artful presentation, more exotic ingredients.” A thick-cut veal chop cost more than $40; papardelle pasta – with rabbit – was more than $25. Mancini's nails traditional high-end dishes like mussels, and while experimentation is welcomed, the high prices leave little room for mistakes.
