Description

Named for a band of Cuban freedom fighters struggling against Spanish domination, Mambi is a full-blown Dominican restaurant in Washington Heights, one of several well-appointed places (There's a full bar! With barstools!) that have recently opened near the bus terminal tucked under the George Washington Bridge. The Cuban sandwich is a thing of beauty, and cheap, too - a warm embrace of pork roast, boiled ham, oozing white cheese, and sliced dill pickles, all for around $3.50. There's a pricier seafood menu (including conch fricassee), roast chicken and stewed guinea hen, and the wonderful soup from Spain that constitutes a sort of Dominican soul food - caldo gallego. Humble dishes like the fried chicken tidbits called chicharron de pollo have rarely been done so well.
