Washington Square in North Beach of SF is a special place. I lived on the square for part of a year and I would watch dozens of Chinese women meet every morning for their Tai Chi workout. I would typically head past them as I wasn't much interested in exercise at that hour of the day, and have breakfast on the corner at Mama's. The chocolate crumb cake is excellent but all of their baked goods are outstanding. Their homemade jam is very good. If there's a long queue, take something to go and sit in the park and exercise by osmosis.
Mama's on Washington Square is one of the best breakfast landmarks in North Beach. They have almost a dozen different "m'omelettes" and french toasts to choose from. Can't decide on what you want? Get the french toast sampler (with the homemade jams instead of the syrup), the Dungeness Crab Omelette with Avocado and Creme Fraiche (only on the weekends) and a LARGE fresh squeezed OJ...OMG, just writing about this makes me want to fly to SF this very moment. The service is always exceptional, but there's always a line...so go early.

Outside it's brutal, but once you get the nod from the server/bouncer, you're ushered into the second line, which hugs the counter. This line is easier.
