Description

Long considered to be one of the coolest art/coffee houses in Phoenix, Mama Java's offers comfy couches and other relaxing seating, Wi-Fi access, and plentiful, spacious tables that make it a great place for students to study. Its baristas also whip out any number of caffeinated concoctions - ranging from high-octane cappuccinos to teas from around the world - and monthly gallery exhibitions from local creative types are featured on the walls. Although it no longer features any live music (owing to its daily 6 p.m. closing time), the weekly spoken word and poetry session goes down on Saturday afternoons.

  • 2006 | BEST NEIGHBORHOOD COFFEE HOUSE, CENTRAL PHOENIX

Look for neighborhood regulars perched at the outside tables, Wi-Fi-ing away with well-behaved pooches at their feet. Enjoy mellow musical and literary events, or just drink in displays of fine art along with your espresso drink, tea, or smoothie. It's a perfect break from the wildly diverse shopping opportunities of Gaslight Square, although, frankly, sometimes you'll want a break from Mama Java's; the joint is really jumping, in a Zen-like way. Its mini-library, for instance, seems... More »

  • 2006 | BEST BLUEGRASS JAM

Brush up on some classic bluegrass, some low-down country blues, and bring out your inner hillbilly during the Arcadia Bluegrass Jam every Sunday night. Started in August 2004, the open bluegrass flat-pickin' session features a healthy mix of musicians equipped with acoustic guitars, banjos, bass, and violins in Mama Java's relaxed and sociable atmosphere. If the only thing you know how to pick is your nose, don't fret. The java and jams flow from 7 to 9 p.m., and admission is free. The jam... More »

  • 2004 | BEST COFFEE HOUSE FOR KIDS

There's a ridiculously catchy children's song that goes, "M-O-M-M-Y needs C-O-F-F-E-E, D-A-D-D-Y needs C-O-F-F-E-E," and once you've heard it, you will find yourself singing it -- especially on those mornings when you have stayed up too late the night before working (or drinking) and your kid decides to greet the day at dawn. On those mornings, or any other time you require refueling, you should take yourself -- and your offspring -- directly to Mama Java's Coffee House. Mama Java's is a... More »
