Okay, right off the bat: Malo is not malo. It’s a decent, stylish Mexican restaurant that inhabits the former Cobalt Cantina in Silver Lake, and the menu is a taut, well-devised little list of small, shareable items. The food has the hearty heft and flavor of good, home-cooked Mexican food. And in keeping with today’s small-dishes, share-everything, anti-starch, Atkins-friendly ethos, entrees come unaccompanied; beans, rice, guacamole and sauteed squash are offered as side dishes.
When the air begins to turn crisp (or, in L.A.'s case, when it turns 60 degrees for two days, then goes back to 80), certain desires are set off in our brains. I, for one, all of a sudden have a burni... More »

Groovy Mexican spot in Silverlake (good for date or pals) with insanely reasonable prices given the menu and vibe. The "must try" everyone talks about is the ground beef taco with pickles (it's like a cheeseburger as a taco and rocks!) - but I also dug the "chewy" tortilla chips (mistake in the fryer that was so damned good they had to put 'em on the menu??), habanero salsa (creamy and hot!) and the grilled fish tacos. If you don't want a standard margarita, try the Spicy Cucumber (insert joke here...) - it's got cucumber, agave, fresh lime and a hint of chile in the finish. Delicioso!
