It feels almost like a bingo parlor at the community church. Fortunately, the quirky Midwestern atmosphere of this bar lends itself to the mostly folk and country acts that perform here. Regular DJ nights also expand the soundtrack to include everything from Latin funk and Jamaican ska to New Wave and indie dance hits.
Writers spar in 7-minute bouts based on given themes. Hosted by Casey Childers and Steven Westdahl.
While most '60s soul parties are dedicated to uptempo bangers, Lost & Found takes a different tack. Thrown Tuesday nights at the Make-Out Room, it'...

Event Review: Chronic Town
R.E.M. tribute band Chronic Town have channeled the look and sound of Athens, GA's favorite sons since 2004, playing hits and album favorites to fans all over the Bay Area.
Chronic Town plays an early, special 80's-only set list at the Make-Out-Room at 7:30 pm for an after-work release from the holiday shopping frenzy. After Chronic Town's performance, "Burn Down the Disco" 80's dance party takes you into the wee hours...
Shockingly, this is located right next door to Willy's barber shop, where I got my hair cut as a kid! Decent atmosphere and good DJs.

There's retro kitsch ... and then there's just plain weird. The Make-Out Room's choice of interior design most definitely falls into the latter category. With its prom-gone-wrong decor (streamers hang from the ceiling like innards from a piñata that was gutted in the late '50s, then forgotten and left to rot in grandma's basement), the Make-Out could almost be a rented party hall that got miraculously frozen in time. In a frosty-yet-hip part of hell. With PBR on tap. It doesn't matter... More »
Somebody else's humiliation never felt so much like catharsis. At this event, which happens more or less monthly at the Make-Out Room, willing subjects climb up on stage with their old diaries, love letters, and teenaged attempts at poetry clutched in their clammy fists. Before an eager, voyeuristic crowd, the readers rewind history and let their younger selves spill their guts -- they profess undying love for that curly-haired guy in math class, tell of horribly fumbled sex acts, and... Ah, the reading series, that venerable Bay Area institution. Just stick some writers in front of a mike and watch the fireworks detonate, right? Wrong, so wrong. Many a literary event has fallen by the wayside from a lack of good TNT. But Other magazine editor Charlie Anders' "Writers With Drinks" continues on, five years strong. What's her secret? Variety! As she writes on her Web site, "Variety is more than just the name of Prince's favorite girl-singer sidekick." You're bound to stay... More »
