An Asian fusion restaurant with a swanky bar and sidewalk patio overlooking Santa Monica's beach, MaKai offers a fish-intensive menu of raw sushi rolls, salmon carpaccio, miso glazed cod and Chilean sea bass. Chef Ryan Baily (formerly of Spago, Sona and Koi) blends classical French technique with a health-conscious Asian influence. MaKai is a nightclub on weekends, so they have a big selection of wine, beer, sake and cocktails.
Definitely go for the happy hour. I recommend dirty martinis and edamame (my dinner staples) to start. Then try their calamari, which is sweet yet spicy, and their lobster quesadillas, a surprising dish that is crazy delicious. Step outside for a nice beach sunset.
