Family-owned Maizie's Café & Bistro is a great example of the new wave of eateries that have opened up along the light-rail path, a stylish, urban neighborhood joint that's friendly and down to earth. The accessible American menu, available all day, features shareable starters, sandwiches, pizzas, and more; on weekends, there's a solid brunch menu, too. For morning coffee or an after-work glass of wine with friends, Maizie's is an easy gathering place, no matter what your mood.

Folks here in the Valley might not experience a true winter chill, but that doesn't mean we don't like to snuggle up with a hearty sandwich and a comforting bowl of soup when we need that extra bit of... More »
Too much bacon? Pfft. Never. We still love bacon, and we'll savor it in any form -- especially when it's in the form of vodka. This uptown bistro loads up their hangover helper with a mix of rich tomato juice, black pepper, spicy horseradish, and bacon vodka, then garnishes it with strips of smoky applewood bacon. The result is more of a meal than a beverage, but it will cure your Sunday-morning blues in no time. More »
For days (okay, it was really hours) a debate raged in the halls of the New Times building over whether or not Popeye is actually a superhero. "No way. He's a cartoon character!" one colleague pronounced."Are you kidding? He's the original superhero!" another cried, just as adamant. In any case, we think it wise for all of us looking to be super-heroic to eat our super-foods, so we'll share our favorite spot to get a dose of spinach. We prefer it fresh, not canned, thank you very much,... More »
Now this is what we call progress. After years of light-rail construction -- when the streets were torn up, local businesses took a hit, and most of us avoided the area altogether -- the Central Corridor has bounced back in a big way. Our favorite sign is the emergence of new restaurants along the rail path, exemplified by a charming neighborhood spot called Maizie's Café & Bistro.Just steps from the station at Camelback and Central, it's hip, affordable, and friendly,... This is not your cigar-smoker's martini. And don't put an olive near it. The Cashmere Martini -- one of the signature cocktails at one of our favorite new CenPho eateries -- is luxury in a glass: vanilla vodka, pineapple juice, and a splash of Chambord. The soft pink hue and exotic aroma move this cocktail to the top of our list of smooth, rich, and -- okay, we'll say it -- feminine elixirs. Move over last year's Cosmopolitan, there's a new "C" in the city. More »
Maizie's is one of my favorite brunch spots. They whip up a delicious omelet (you choose the fillings from a bevy of options) and I love the potatoes on the side. I can never seem to make my way through a whole Bloody Mary at other places - too much tomato, too spicy, too strong. However, the Bloody Mary at Maizie's is just perfect. They also have a great happy hour! Try the wingless buffalo dip - if I wasn't vegetarian, it would be my go-to snack to accompany an ice cold beer.
