With its red-lit interior, lounge atmosphere, and American cuisine, nowhere else says old-time Miami quite like Magnum. This classic bar and restaurant is located on the 79th Street Causeway and is known as a hot spot for older gay gentlemen. When Liza Minnelli and Nina Simone aren't blasting over the speakers, a live crooner and pianist re-create Broadway's best in the small stage area at the center of the venue. Surrounding the piano are barstools where patrons swoon to songs by Rodgers & Hammerstein. Magnum is also known for its homestyle fried chicken ($18.50), and people travel far and wide to munch on its crisp goodness. When it's in season, try the avocado with crab appetizer ($15.95). And puttanesca pasta ($15.95) will fill you up before you hit the Shack Bar outside, where you can drink the night away on a dime. The bar is a little Cape Cod and a little Key West, making you feel like you're on vacation without leaving town. There's a TV set, fun music, and a half-off beer-and-booze happy hour that runs daily from 5 to 8. There are also $4 margaritas and bloody marys and $3 roadkill shots so you can stay lu-bricated, as Lionel Richie says, all night long.
Eating fried chicken is no tidy affair. Golden brittle breading bursts after a gentle nibble. Bits of crust cascade beneath your chin. Juices flow. Fingers glisten. Lips gleam. (Call this gloss pollo ... More »
Last night's episode of Crave on the Food Network was "Fried Chicken: Deep Fried Love in a Bucket," during which the food-critic host, Troy Johnson, gnawed his way through several states looking for "... More »
For everything that 11th Street Diner's is not, Magnum Lounge's fried chicken (emphatically) is: crispy breading fortifying juicy, meaty pieces of tender chicken that is perfectly seasoned. It is, han... More »
Few people would suspect that a piano bar blaring live show tunes is the site of the tastiest, crispiest fried chicken in Miami. Such is the case at Magnum Restaurant and Lounge, a local institution known for its kitschy atmosphere and savory dishes. Of course, anyone who dined at Jeffrey's on Lincoln Road in the '90s knows that owner Jeffrey Landsman is a foodie. Although he is long gone from SoBe, another casualty of the chainification of Lincoln Road, his latest spot is also teeming with... More »
Magnum's unadorned concrete exterior walls hug a corner on the 79th Street Causeway and leave the impression of nothing more than a local dive. But like all diamonds in the rough, Magnum's bland façade is a stark contrast to its lush, romantic interior. The décor is red like painted lips that leave a trace of their kiss on a crystal goblet. Further accentuating the lusty theme is the pervading darkness that shrouds strangers in mystery as they sip their cocktails under a... More »
It's been around for only a few years, but the Magnum Lounge has a lived-in feel. It's dark and homey, and it comfortably pulls off a combination of gay-bar and restaurant atmospherics. If any one element does this trick, it's definitely the piano, which sits between the two halves of the lounge. This is a place where you're likely to see an Elvis Costello look-alike sipping his red wine and mooning over the bartender, despite the adorable object's questionable taste in tattoos. Across the... We're not exactly sure why, but most people prefer to be romantic in the dark. If that's true for you, then Magnum, owned by Jeffrey's proprietors Jeffrey Landsman and Kurt Schmidt (Jeffrey's has been a perennial winner of this award), is shadowy enough for smooching, shady enough for liaisons of the deliciously illicit kind. Not only is the room dimly lighted in an alluring way, a throaty jazz singer and a back-door entrance off a rather deserted alleyway suggest something concealed,... More »
