  • 2007 | Best Hotel Bar

You may not be able to afford to stay at the Magnolia, but that shouldn't keep you from nabbing a drink in the hotel's posh second-floor bar. There's something almost ethereal about the place, which is decked out with plasma TVs and dozens of leather couches and chairs. There's live jazz every evening, and a billiards room. A setting this luxurious doesn't merely have a pool table. It has a billiards room. More »

  • 2003 | Best Renovation

While more and more old downtown structures are getting well-deserved restorations, this makeover is much more than skin-deep. The former 1926 Post-Dispatch building had long been an example of urban blight, a boxlike building that was boarded up and hardly worthy of notice for decades. But the Magnolia hotel chain, headquartered in Denver, has turned this ugly duckling into dynamic new lodging -- and given it an exciting new look for all of Houston to enjoy. Foremost for visitors is the... More »

Being a native Louisianan, I'm naturally drawn to three things: alcohol, drama and politics. I'm also into romanticized symbols of the South, so walking around downtown on a recent Sunday night, I had to check out The Magnolia Hotel (1100 Texas, 7... More »

It was fun to stay at the Magnolia. They have a free continental breakfast that is way more than continental, free happy hour drink coupons, and free milk and cookies. If you don't feel like free, they offer room service at typical room service prices. Their location is very conveniently located near Main Street in downtown Houston and is in easy walking distance of most downtown locations, assuming it isn't 105 degrees outside... The room price was great through hotels.com and they offered multi-night discounts.

Nice hotel. Just don't be shocked to walk into an old-ish building just to see a really modern lobby!
