There are distinct advantages to drinking in hotel bars, even at hotels in the city where you live. There is always wi-fi available. The bartender doesn't care if you nurse or linger over your drink; ... More »
Being a native Louisianan, I'm naturally drawn to three things: alcohol, drama and politics. I'm also into romanticized symbols of the South, so walking around downtown on a recent Sunday night, I had to check out The Magnolia Hotel (1100 Texas,... More »
Located in a 1920s-era building that formerly housed the precursor to The Houston Post, the Magnolia symbolizes sleek, understated elegance. From its rooftop pool to its hardwood-floored lobby to its modern-yet-cozy rooms in between, everything about the Magnolia was designed with a sharp eye for detail and dignity. There is no gaudiness, no feeling that -- unlike some other boutiques -- it will look garish and dated in a handful of years. Besides the delicious, complimentary... More »

It was fun to stay at the Magnolia. They have a free continental breakfast that is way more than continental, free happy hour drink coupons, and free milk and cookies. If you don't feel like free, they offer room service at typical room service prices. Their location is very conveniently located near Main Street in downtown Houston and is in easy walking distance of most downtown locations, assuming it isn't 105 degrees outside... The room price was great through hotels.com and they offered multi-night discounts.
Nice hotel. Just don't be shocked to walk into an old-ish building just to see a really modern lobby!
going there for v-day with wife. I'll update you later
