The latest restaurant from Vito Racanelli Jr. (Onesto Pizza & Trattoria, the late Big V's Burger Joint) offers Italian cuisine best described as upscale rustic. Entrées are served in cast-iron skillets: The grilled steak and the roasted red snapper are both winners. Pastas are substantial, and the pork-rib ragu that coats a serving of maccheroni larghi seems to distill an entire pig into one rich sauce. The standout offering might be the "Hunter's Egg," one of the antipasti: An egg poached in tomato broth served over polenta, it's the hearty peasant dish of your dreams.

Creative and fresh! The food is seasonal and amazing. The pizza is fantastic and the crust is crunchy but dense. My favorite appetizer is this amazing dish served on flatbread. It has wild greens, garbanzo beans, tomatoes, an a olive pate with olive oil drizzled on top. You can fill up on just that. It's cool inside but I felt comfortable being there with my toddler.
It has been quite the culinary trip for chef Vito Racanelli Jr. -- from the lovably rough-and-tumble Big V's Burger Joint (now closed) to the casual, neighborhood-focused Onesto Pizza & Trattoria (still open, but Racanelli is no longer involved) to his current venue, Mad Tomato. Though the restaurant's volume can match its owner's gregarious personality, this is a decidedly more upscale venture where Racanelli can really show off his chops, from an elegant saffron linguini in a...
