Description

Forget about the pseudo-diners and nostalgia-themed restaurants that popped up during the '90s. This family-friendly place, established in 1928, is the real deal. Sit at the counter and swivel on your stool with an ice cream soda or old-fashioned lemonade. Enjoy burgers and sandwiches in one of the old wooden booths. The vintage jukebox - two plays for a quarter - features old 45s you haven't heard in years.

  • 2007 | BEST MILKSHAKES

We used to think of milkshakes as a summertime treat, until we moved to Phoenix. Now they're as essential to us year-round as sunscreen, flip-flops, and car window shades. Whenever we're in the mood to cool down with a creamy, dreamy chocolate malted, or a picture-perfect strawberry shake with whipped cream and a cherry on top, we head to MacAlpine's Soda Fountain, where hand-scooped Thrifty ice cream, mixed to a froth with an old-fashioned milkshake blender, is one of the house specialties.... • 2006 | BEST OLD SCHOOL SODA SHOP

Established in 1928, MacAlpine's is the closest Valley residents can get anymore to an old-style soda shop. From the black-and-white-checkered tile and the vintage soda signs to the old jukebox packed full of 45s from artists like Petula Clark and The Platters, everything about the joint harks back to the days when Hula-Hoops and waitresses on roller skates were new fads (but, alas, the servers at MacAlpine's do not wear roller skates). The menu is old-school, too, with sodas available in... More »

  • 2003 | BEST CLUB FOR SWING

Lindy-hoppers and East Coast swing dancers have never had a Valley nightclub to call their own seven nights a week. In other words, they don't drink enough of the hard stuff and they demand too much real estate on the dance floor to make them attractive to bar owners. But MacAlpine's old-fashioned soda shop, a local landmark since 1928, at least makes every Friday night all right for swingers. Using a neighboring former antiques shop for its ballroom, this retro-for-real restaurant offers... More »
