LuLu has not only maintained its high standards in the years since it opened and became instantly popular for its stylish hangarlike setting and hearty Mediterranean fare grilled and roasted in wood-fired ovens, but also improved upon them. Its wine service is user-friendly (you can choose among well-priced flights or create your own, since the restaurant offers 2- and 4-ounce pours), most of the cooking is excellent (we weren't dazzled by the desserts), and there's a general feeling of bonhomie and good cheer. One of S.F.'s best restaurants.

In addition to the artfully arranged flights offered by the restaurant, you can assemble your own from dozens... More »
This SOMA landmark -- a trailblazer when Reed Hearon opened its doors in 1992 -- is still going strong nearly a decade later, serving up fabulously rustic creations in a noisy, high-spirited, oft-imitated milieu. The ripest, most aromatic fruits and vegetables and the freshest meats and seafood are complemented with dense, delicious house-baked breads, a wide array of fine wines, and all manner of mustards, vinegars, and condiments created on the premises. The result is memorable French... More »
