Description

With everything else going on at Luka's -- pool, pinball, DJs, dancing, art openings, 16 beers on tap at the full bar -- it seems astonishing that the happening spot (which took the place of an aging Hofbrau) should also have a happening kitchen, but it does. Serious sandwiches (flank steak, apricot-braised pork, a thick burger) and salads rule at lunch; dinner is even more serious, featuring such dishes as grilled rib-eye, choucroute garnie, braised lamb shank, and cioppino. An array of fresh seafood, including a plateau de fruits de mer and tasty crab fritters, is available at lunch and dinner. Finish with a crème fraîche mousse or a selection of cheeses.

    Luka's is the only place anywhere near downtown Oakland to get food after 9 p.m. on a Sunday. The kitchen is open until 10:30 p.m. every night, and with their excellent fresh local ingredients and well-executed menu, it's a great place to eat any time.
