Originally founded in 1947 in San Antonio by Bob Luby and Charles Johnston, Luby's is a regional institution for fast cafeteria-style dining. Folks belly up to the line knowing full well the grub ain't Stephan Pyles. What is served at all Luby's is comfort food. Chief among the comfort is the signature fried fish. The popular entrée can, like all main dishes, be paired with two sides and a roll from either the short Lu Ann or the extensive Combos options. The latter might be the better deal because of greater choice. It includes the aforementioned fried fish as well as chicken-fried chicken and the Luby's Texas Ribeye. Sides and desserts in this utilitarian appointed restaurant follow the comfort line from the mac and cheese to the fried okra all the way to their classic namesake pecan pie. Just remember to avoid the early-bird rush.
