Description

Blink and you’ll miss this place. But follow the wafting smells of deep-fried tortillas, and your nose will lead you to Los Compadres, where all-day lunch specials are less than $6 and nothing on the menu is over $10. This family-owned Mexican joint deep fries its tortillas to order, so the standard Sonoran fare is always hot and fresh. And everything from the beans and rice to the mouthwatering green chile beef is top notch. Lunch platters include surprisingly filling mini versions of tacos, burritos, chimichangas, enchiladas, or tostadas. Plus, you can really indulge on a dime with a bottle of beer or glass of wine for $2.50 each. If you’re in central Phoenix near Camelback Road, do yourself a favor and stop by for lunch, dinner, or at least the irresistible sopapillas priced under two bucks. Smothered in honey and powdered sugar, they’re a great end to any meal.

Be forewarned that the lunch specials are mini versions of standard Sonoran fare, which means tiny tacos, bitsy burritos, mini tostadas, and the like, but one plate is still... More »

  • 2009 | Best Neighborhood Mexican, Central Phoenix

We're never too busy to get our grub on at Los Compadres. That's because this institution makes it easy to grab our favorite Mexican dishes to go. Counter service is quick, and everything's packaged to take home, even if we end up snagging a table to eat on the premises. We love the top-notch beans and rice, 10 different kinds of soul-satisfying burros (machaca's a good pick), and anything with their mouthwatering green chile beef. Better yet, the prices are so cheap that we can come here... More »
