The Donut Man, a.k.a Jim Nakano's doughnut stand in Glendora, is a bit like a pastry madhouse. The doughnuts are stretched and pulled until oversized, sometimes topped with thick layers of cream and sprinkles, and filled to capacity, oozing over the edges like a volcanic science experiment gone wrong. But when you taste these doughnuts, they're oh so right. Your favorite is probably here, whether that's a maple bar, a buttermilk doughnut, an apple fritter or a good old glazed doughnut. But your favorite is probably better at this stand than you ever thought it could be. Take the Tiger Tail, for example, which is a twist, literally, on a basic glazed braid, weaving together both chocolate and vanilla and ending up about the size of your forearm. Then there's the famous strawberry doughnut, which is a split-open pastry that somehow manages to hold about a dump truck's worth of sweet strawberries. After that, a plain old jelly doughnut just doesn’t look the same. The strawberry iteration is available only in spring, but it's highly recommended that you seek out the peach or the apple in its absence.

    I've never had the mythical peach donuts, but I've had the strawberry, and they are definitely worth the drive. OK, maybe they're not literally worth the drive when you figure The Donut Man is actually about $10 in gas out of town, but metaphorically they're worth a drive halfway across the country.

    Always get the seasonal fruit (strawberry or peach), then try the Bavarian cream, and there's always room for a cruller. It melts in your mouth like a canelé!
