Chef Eric Lechasseur knows that eating is about much more than survival these days, which means healthy meals also need to be approachable. At his simple order-at-the-counter restaurant Seed Kitchen in Venice, Lechasseur transforms humdrum vegan and macrobiotic plates into dishes that would make a carnivore salivate. The best is perhaps the BBQ “burger,” a faux-meaty tempeh patty that arrives with snappy fresh vegetables on a crispy seven-grain sourdough roll. It's the sort of sloppy, sordid dish that macrobiotic fanatics simply couldn't get before Lechasseur, served up in a bright Pacific Avenue space. The simple paninis are also a lunchtime hit, with vegan cupcakes for dessert. (Of course!) According to Lechasseur, all healthy food should taste this good; its time others started listening.

    True to its name, this restaurant is a capsule of life and health set the grit and dirt of Venice. Seed is macrobiotic, organic, and vegan -- no processed crap here, even the burgers and desserts are good for ya! Literally everything on the menu looks good, from salad, to rice bowls, to paninis, to curry...I want it all! The Saisai Donburi Macro Bowl is fantastic, like 5 dishes... More >>
