Map & Directions 5333 Zoo Drive
Los Angeles, CA 90027

LA Weekly's Description

Where else in L.A. can you find flamingos, ocelots and Madagascar hissing cockroaches all under one roof?

For just $17, see more than 1,000 different species of plants and animals, with names as wild as their faces (shingleback skink, laughing kookaburra and tawny frogmouth, to name a few).

Gawk at the mandrill, whose face looks like a Paint-by-Numbers accident, or commiserate with 97 percent human portion of the Bornean Orangutan in the recently spruced primate habitats.

Open 7 days a week.

  • HISTORY on 03/31/10

The original LA zoo opened in 1912 about two miles north of this location until it opened here in 1966. This location originally contained housing for veterans returning from WWII until the mid-1950s

  • Many years ago I taught a penguin here how to play chess. His Sicilian Defense was among the best I’ve ever seen.

It's a great zoo, and a nice, cheap way to spend a nice afternoon. Bring your walking shoes, though.

There is a petting zoo to the right, after passing through the main entrance but before arriving at the main zoo areas.Powered by ParentsConnect.com
